The adjustable gastric banding is indicated for individuals with a BMI of 27 (Class I Obesity) and above as recommended by the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Gastric banding is a minimally invasive procedure that is performed using laparoscopy (surgery performed using only small holes in the abdomen). This minimally invasive surgical technique results in less post operative pain and minimal scars. The band is placed and wrapped around the upper end of the stomach resulting in restriction of solid food intake. There is no cutting or stapling of the stomach or intestines required.

A gentle and gradual reduction in food intake will in turn leads to a healthy weight loss. The gastric band is strictly a restrictive procedure (ie. limits food intake by feeling full early) and therefore does not affect the absorption of food and essential vitamins. The gastric band is also a reversible procedure and is associated with a low surgical risk.

It has minimal effects on liquids and hence taking excessive high caloric liquids (eg. soft drinks, sugary drinks, ice-cream, chocolates and alcohol) will negate the weight loss effect of the gastric band. A large number of surgeons appreciate the pre-formed gastric band, which allows it to be drawn easily through the posterior tunnelling of the stomach and facilitates placement. In many cases, the decision as to the size, i.e. diameter, of the gastric band best-suited for a given patient can only be made during the operation. Here too, surgeons have the option to decide intra-operatively, because MiniMizer products feature a 2-phase closure system.

The first closure phase has an inner diameter of 31 mm or a band length of about 11 cm. The second closure phase has an inner diameter of 26 mm or a band length of about 10 cm. The closure instrument is a convenient tool for closing the gastric band. Seromuscular sutures through the retaining loops serve to attach the gastric band to the anterior wall of the stomach without plication. Intra-gastric Balloon

The indication for the placement of the intra gastric balloon is for overweight individuals (BMI 24 and above) after failing conservative methods or for patients who are planned for surgery but would be required to lose some weight before the operation. The intra-gastric balloon is a temporary weight loss device placed in the stomach, similar to having an endoscopic procedure. It is placed through the mouth and it’s position checked using the endoscope. Once it is in the right position, the balloon is inflated to its required size and left in the stomach for upto 6 months. There will be a feeling of fullness when less food is consumed than before, compelling one to stop eating earlier. This results in a gradual weight loss. At the end of the treatment with the intra-gastric balloon which is usually in 6 months, it is then removed using the endoscope, without any residual effect to the stomachLike the gastric band, the balloon is also a tool in weight loss and there must be compliance and self determination to lose weight by adopting healthy lifestyles and changes to the choice of food intake.
